qBittorrent 4.6 Unleashes Enhanced Security, Tag Editing, and User-Friendly Features

qBittorrent 4.6 has just been unveiled, marking a significant update for this open-source BitTorrent client compatible with GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows. The release introduces an exciting addition: experimental BitTorrent over I2P (Invisible Internet Protocol) support, promising enhanced security and anonymity for torrenting. As explained by one of the developers, “I2P addressing uses a destination rather than an IP and port.”

In addition to I2P support, this version brings several feature enhancements and quality-of-life improvements. Notably, a new dialog for editing torrent tags has been introduced, offering users more flexibility in organizing their downloads. The update also adds options to customize tracker merging behavior, the ability to stop seeding torrents when they become inactive, and an opportunity to hide zero-status filters automatically.

A new feature for copying library versions to the clipboard has been added, streamlining the process for users. A shortcut for permanently banning peers is now available. The “Proxy hostname lookup” option has been expanded to cover a wider scope, and enhancements have been made to both the “Watched folder options” and the “Automated RSS downloader” dialogs.

Improvements in UI theming are also noteworthy, with support for third-party icons in dark mode and the ability to filter the torrent list by save path. Users can now add new torrents to the queue’s top, utilize a proxy per subsystem, and disable the confirmation prompt for Pause/Resume All operations.

qBittorrent 4.6 exposes additional options, including “socket send/receive buffer size,” “max torrent file size,” and “decode limits.” This version displays filtered port numbers in the logs and offers an alternative keyboard shortcut (CTRL+E) for CTRL+F.

The WebUI component has undergone significant updates as well. Users are advised to change the default WebUI credentials, as the previous “admin admin” combination has reportedly been targeted. Future releases will disable these default credentials, requiring users to create new ones to enhance security.

Aside from these user-facing changes, qBittorrent 4.6 boasts various code improvements, refactorings, and bug fixes. Users can conveniently access this release through a universal AppImage binary available for download from the official website, compatible with numerous GNU/Linux distributions.
